Mihi mai ki a Awhina Rangitauira who acknowledges her Murupara GP for the support, care, and sympathy he’s provide especially during challenging times.

Here’s her story…

I still recall the heartbreaking moment in February 2001 when I nearly lost my husband, soulmate, and the father of our two children.

Tiare (Rangitauira), our youngest girl, Robyn, and I were laying concrete at home when he collapsed and stopped breathing, which felt like forever. The distress on my daughter’s face, seeing her Dad on the ground, made me snap out of it and get a grip to start CPR on him.

We managed to revive him after a few goes, although I have blocked parts of this trauma, I was relieved the ambulance and Dr Bernard Conlon had arrived. I vividly remember hearing your voice Dr Conlon asking one of the medical personnel with you to contact the surgery and pass on a message to my sister-in-law, Kiri, who worked there as a nurse to let her know her brother was alive and alright. I’m forever appreciative of your thoughtful and instinctive nature that helped lessen my worry and uncertainty.

I’m thankful we had an extra two-and-a-half months before Tiare passed away in May that same year. I’m thankful to you, Dr Conlon, for visiting me and my daughters at home after Tiare’s passing to share information to unanswered questions we had. You helped answer our questions and helped bring a small sense of closure. I sincerely appreciate your honesty and letting us know that every possible option to revive Tiare had been tried by our brother-in-law, James, who was with Tiare at the time he passed away.

I remember Dr Conlon told us that Tiare showed signs of electricity in the heart because of the tireless efforts implementing chest compressions to restart his heart. But unfortunately, the second aortic valve replacement in Tiare’s heart wasn’t working properly. We believe and know wholeheartedly my soulmate would have done everything he could do to come back to us if he could. We have so much gratitude and love for my brother-in-law, James, for all he did for my husband, Tiare.

I have no words to describe my deepest thanks for all, Dr Conlon, and his wife, Dr Britta Noske, have done for my whānau.

Dr Conlon, you have cared for four generations of our Rangitauira whānau. You’ve walked alongside my daughters and I through some of the most heartbreaking times of our lives, your advice has helped me towards dealing with some of our grief we were going through.

It is our belief, Doctor Conlon, that you not only walk beside us, but you share our pain, and those of all of your patients as well too.

Ka nui ngā mihi me ngā aroha Dr Conlon and the Murupara Medical Centre.

Nā ngā whānau Rangitauira, te whānau Katene hoki.
