Murupara Medical Centre a reason for retiring in Te Ika Whenua

01 December 2021

Mihi mai ki a Heeni and Bill McClunie who returned home to Murupara four years ago from Tauranga.

The couple both live with a heart condition. They say they wanted to retire in Murupara partly because the town has an excellent medical centre.

The pair say the staff at the Murupara Medical Centre are proactive, transparent and caring.

“We’ve had many doctors. But my wider whānau believe and attest for our GP, Dr Bernard Conlon and his team,” says Heeni who is from Te Ika Whenua.

Both Heeni and Dr Conlon are representatives of the Murupara Catholic Church, Sacred Heart, Council.

Heeni and Bill are appreciative of the care Dr Conlon and his staff at the surgery provide to Te Ika Whenua.

“Dr Conlon called into our home one time. The day after an evening church meeting to check on Heeni. She wasn’t her best at the meeting and Bernard felt drawn to come to see my Heeni because she looked pale and wasn’t engaged at the church meeting,” says Bill.

Heeni says she and her husband Bill have had many doctors over the years because of their health ailments but have never met such a caring general practitioner like Bernard Conlon.

“We’re grateful to Bernard and his team at the surgery for the care they provide. Bernard provides a style of rural care that we were accustomed to as youngsters – similarly to when we last lived in Murupara decades ago,” says Bill.

The couple says they trust Dr Conlon and the staff at the Murupara Medical Council.

“We’re disheartened by the Ministry of Health and the Medical Council’s lack of thought for us as residents of Te Ika Whenua. We are grateful to Dr Conlon and the surgery because they know us. They know the people of this area and go above and beyond to ensure our health care,” says Bill.

Heeni says Dr Conlon is a caring and transparent GP.

“Because of our respective ailments, Dr Bernard Conlon gave us information about the Pfizer vaccine. He was supportive of our choice to receive the Covid-19 injection. That’s the kind of doctor he is. We chose to get the vaccine because of our stage of life and because we’re on a variety of medication for our health ailments,” says Heeni.
